Scott. Natural skincare for the active man

Natural skincare for the active man

Scott. is a range of natural skincare products, specifically formulated for the active man. Organic where possible, we believe in only using the best quality ingredients on our skin.

Formulated by men, for men, we take pride in the fact that we set out as a brand aimed at active guys who like to look after their skin, but are not slaves to a skincare regime.

Ah, I see!

So, yep, we’re all guilty of several of these, right? I guess the key lesson is moderation… hmm.

Habit number 5 is the one that caught my eye – reading up on skincare formulation in our research for developing our very first Scott products, it really opens your eyes to the stuff that goes into skincare products. Some of my favourite brands have all these ingredients which are really no good for your skin (but handily cost next to nothing and make products foam magically, or help the product last for 20 years on the shelf).

Scott’s aim will be to do all the hard work for you. No need to scour the ingredient list as you know everything that goes in is there to make your skin look great. That’s No. 5 checked off the list!

Bring it home

Why fly abroad when you have views like this in good ol’ GB? The view from Scafell Pike, the Lake District, in all its glory. Staying at Natural Retreats in Richmond in the Yorkshire Dales was a treat (great for groups btw), just watch out for the herds of rabbits when driving down to the cabins!

Sun and ageing...

Check this out from Men’s Fitness:

Here at Scott we’re a firm believer in protecting your skin from UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning, ouch) rays. We’re hoping to feature a decent SPF in our moisturiser (in the pipeline) to let you get outside and enjoy life without having to worry about these nasty rays.

I know a real concern about SPF is the potential for it to be a bit greasy on the skin or a bit impermeable. Hopefully we can work with the formulators to get the right balance between a good SPF and a product which is still a joy to use… watch this space!

To the beach!

To celebrate some sunshine in London (finally), I thought a visit to the beach was in order – check out these bad boys on the Danish island of Ærø. A visit to the beach and a cycle around this beautiful island is definitely recommended if you want to escape it all! (also check out Carsten Jensen’s ‘We, the Drowned’, which is set on the island)

Men's skin versus women's skin...

So, yep, ‘Men’s Skincare?’ is the tagline for this blog. Men’s skin. Is it really different to women’s?

Well a month or so ago, we undertook some market research, questioning nearly 150 guys about their grooming habits, and it was pretty enlightening. Just over half of the respondents said that it was less important or not at all important that the products they chose were specifically formulated for men. Some of the reasons for this:

“Skin is skin on either a man or a woman it will need similar treatment. Men’s brands are just packaged differently”

“Little difference in products. Feel differences more down to marketing”

“Well, it’s skin, isn’t it. I imagine what works on a woman works equally well on a man, dog, or goose”

“I think men’s products are sometimes just repackaged female products and given a slight manly perfume.”

Interesting, no?

Here at Scott, we believe that there is a difference in men and women’s skin (check out this piece by Ahmed Zambarakji for Shortlist for more on the topic:!-definitely-not-for-girls), and it could pay off to invest some time and thought into the product you choose. A lot of guys out there buy products from women’s ranges, partially because of the belief that men’s skin isn’t different, but also perhaps because male brands just don’t hit the spot: over-fragranced with ‘male’ scents (which actually just irritate your skin), lack of choice in brands, the perception that the male range is just an after-thought spin-off from a successful female range, and cliche packaging/marketing.

Scott aims to strike the balance between satisfying the needs of the skin of  modern man and a great brand which fits into your life and doesn’t treat you like dumb bloke.

Ape to Gentleman.

Check this out by one of our fave grooming sites, Ape to Gentleman.

This piece reminds us that looking great is more than gymming to an inch of your life and feeding on protein shakes. A well rounded, active lifestyle, feeding your mouth with nutritious food, and feeding your skin with the right skin products, is the key!

Plus there’s an interactive thing in it too, which is always good.

This is where Tom first wrote about it.

and so the adventure began…

Scott skincare. Born March 2013.  A healthy seven and half pounds. Full of potential…?? So this section of the blog follows the journey of Scott the brand. A very scary but truly exciting adventure.

So where did it all begin? After yet another drab day at work, reading over hundreds of dull emails, pretending to care, a quick tube journey home, a browse of Amazon, and a kindle download later, I was immersed in  The School of Life’s ‘How to Find Fulfilling Work’ by Roman Krznaric. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut at work, I truly recommend this read for that much needed kick up the ass.

Feeling inspired and boosted by my read, and after a few excited conversations with Richard, the idea of Scott was born. We know skincare, right? Why don’t we start a cool new range for men, with products which we’d love to use ourselves, and could see all our friends using? Why the hell not?

Ah, yes, a distinct lack of: money, skin expertise, business knowledge, industry know-how. But then we do love a challenge. And so the adventure began!
